About Just Drones

The Just Drones team

Just Drones started as a side project for a handful of Australian drone pilots who were tired of “best drone 2017” lists getting recycled forever. We fly DJI, Autel, Holy Stone and the odd kit build between us, and we live in the same drone laws, frequency rules and battery import headaches as everyone else on this side of the world.

Liam Carver handles most of the news and policy coverage. He’s been flying since the original Phantom 1 and has gone through about every CASA rule change going. Marcus Yeo is our reviews lead — he is the one who actually crashes test units into trees so you don’t. Ava Tien writes the agricultural, mapping and commercial pieces; she ran a survey business in regional Queensland for six years before joining us. Hannah Briggs looks after beginner buying guides and is responsible for the fact that we now mostly write in plain English instead of pilot jargon.

How we make money

Just Drones is reader-supported and 100% independent. Some of the product links on this site go to Amazon, and when you buy through one of them we earn a small commission. It costs you nothing extra. We do not take payments from drone manufacturers to publish “reviews” or rankings, and we do not run sponsored content as editorial. If we tell you a drone is mid, it’s because we think it’s mid.

How we decide what to recommend

Every product we put on a “best of” list, we either own, have flown, or have spent significant time looking at first-hand footage from real owners. We weight Australian price and stock availability heavily — there’s no point recommending a US-only release with a six-week shipping wait and 30% surcharge. Where the gear we’d recommend is not currently sold on Amazon Australia, we say so plainly.
