By Ava Tien for the Just Drones team — updated 20 May 2026
Quick verdict: I have flown the EVO Max 4N on three jobs for the Just Drones team — a structure fire scan, an overnight SAR exercise, and an insurance thermography session. Verdict: the right buy if your work needs real low-light visible-spectrum capability and you dont want the DJI ecosystem.

Autel EVO Max 4N review
What’s good about it
The starlight visible sensor is the real product
Visible-spectrum performance at moonlight levels. Tested at 0.001 lux on the team rig and got identifiable face-level imagery. DJI’s enterprise line still cant match this for visible night work.
No DJI cloud dependency
For agencies that have ruled out DJI on data sovereignty grounds, Autel is the practical answer. Local storage, no mandatory cloud sync, no AeroScope broadcast.
Mil-spec build quality
IP43, magnesium frame, hot-swap batteries. Have taken this through dust, fog and light rain without issue across three jobs.
Laser rangefinder is genuinely useful
Target range and elevation overlay in the live feed. SAR teams pick this up fast and refuse to fly without it after a week.
What’s not so good
The app is still rougher than DJI Pilot 2
Autel Enterprise has improved but is one generation behind on UX. Expect more menu hunting on first jobs.
Thermal is good, not best-in-class
If thermal is your primary deliverable, the Mavic 3 Enterprise Thermal still has the edge on overlay quality and sensitivity.
$11,500 entry is real
This isn’t a recreational purchase. Full kit with smart controller, multiple batteries, training and software lands closer to $20k.
Australian after-sales is limited
DJI has 12 service partners nationally, Autel has 3. Plan around it — the Just Drones team has had to ship one drone interstate for a 3-week turn.
Who should buy this
Public safety, SAR, security or inspection where night visible-spectrum matters and DJI is ruled out.
Who should skip
Commercial operator who’d use DJI Pilot 2 cloud features, or your work is daytime survey — Mavic 3 Enterprise RTK wins.
Heads up: the buy button above goes to Amazon Australia with the Just Drones team’s affiliate tag drones02-22. Costs you nothing extra; pays for the gear we crash during testing.
